General Session #1 just finished. Man. It was AWESOME. The time opened with this girl who gave a dramatic opener to how SERIOUSLY RIDICULOUS our God is, and how SERIOUSLY RIDICULOUSLY in love He is with you and me. (Obviously, the theme of the convention this year.) Mercy Me came out for a concert and they totally rocked, and then this guy who does Sand Art did some of his stuff (really cool art where he's constantly manipulating sand into powerful images). Then we heard from the guy above...Francis Chan. He totally rocks. What did I take away from it? That the term "it's just not cultural today" is not going to be a part of my vocabulary. But, as I've been making that a mantra for some time now, I'm getting scared. You see, when it comes to the Youth Ministry the Lord has put me in charge of, I've been quite aware of making Jesus first in all that we do. Making sure that our messages aren't watered down, our kids are cared for and that they have a great time doing those first two things. But, I found out that last night, we're getting bigger. And, I'm not bragging when I say this. I'M NOT, DON'T HEAR THAT. I have been a part of a large youth ministry (I grew up in one) and it's great if we have people inviting their friends, but I'm running out of people to do #2...love them. I want to keep them, but I want to feed them while they are there, and I want that to be authenic...and I want it to be accountable...and I want it to be under the Lord's authority.
Chan asked us a question: Do you feel at peace when you are alone with your Bible? NO! I don't, which I think is a good thing.
Man. Then we ended with some Crowder worship...You are my Joy...Killer. Tears running down my face. The guy next to me (who's not a handraiser/dancer/crazy person...unlike me) just kept inching away. I'd say...it was an awesome General Session!
